Although we eat tons of fruit and vegetables, we tend to throw out a lot due to it spoiling. I like to make sure there is always a good amount of fruit in my home for my family of five. I try my best to get just the right amount but it's usually a bit too much and some produce spoils before we get to eat it.
I was given the opportunity to review a product called BluApple. This product naturally keeps fruits and vegetables fresh longer by absorbing the ethylene gas they produce into the packet inside the BluApple.
I usually keep my bananas on the kitchen counter and the rest of my fruit and vegetables go into the crisper in the fridge. I placed one BluApple on the counter next to the bananas I had just bought at the supermarket. I placed the other into the crisper where I keep my apples, plums and oranges, etc. Usually, after a day or two, I notice tiny brown spots on my bananas. When using the BluApple, I am happy to say, I didn't notice any spots until day FIVE!!! Even after day five, the bananas seemed to ripen a lot slower than before I started using the BluApple. As for the fruits in the refrigerator, I have not had a single fruit spoil since I placed the BluApple with them. I was shocked to see the last couple fruits that hadn't been eaten were still fresh. They had been in there for about 3 weeks! Normally, they would have been tossed because they were spoiled but the BluApple prevented that.
Below are pictures of day 3 and 4. (The first two days I didn't think to take pictures but after I noticed no spots, I decided it would be a great idea!
If you are wondering how this is possible, here is some info from the BluApple site to explain.
Ethylene gas is given off by all living plants, especially by fruits, vegetables and flowers, and acts as a chemical signal to speed up the ripening process. The release of this gas is thought to be a mechanism by which plants promote uniform ripening or opening, etc. In nature, the uniformity of these events attracts the maximum number of pollinators or seed disseminators, such as birds and insects. At home, however, when you store your fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, ethylene gas builds up. As a result the ripening process is accelerated too quickly. This is a major reason we all throw out so much spoiled produce!
There are three key elements to long produce life: a) temperature - keeping produce cold; b) humidity - using vented plastic bags to keep a moist, but not wet environment; c) ethylene gas management - using the Bluapple. Disruption of any one of these elements will cause premature spoilage.
